On Lake Gogebic

Lake Gogebic is the largest natural inland lake in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It lies in the far western Upper Peninsula near the Wisconsin border, inside the Ottawa National Forest, and is split between Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. The lake also crosses the line between the Central and Eastern time zones. It covers 13,380 acres and is about 14 miles long and up to 2.5 miles wide. Average depth is 17.5 feet and maximum depth is 38 feet. Trout Brook and the Merriwether and Slate rivers flow in, and the lake drains through the West Branch of the Ontonagon River. The lake is natural, but the Upper Peninsula Power Company regulates its level with the Bergland Dam downstream on the West Branch. Bergland sits at the north end of the lake.
