On Connecticut River Reservoir
The Connecticut River Reservoir is the lower part of the impoundment behind Wilder Dam, a hydroelectric dam on the Connecticut River. The dam sits at river mile 217.4, about 1.5 miles upstream of where the White River joins, and spans the river between Hartford, Vermont, and Lebanon, New Hampshire. Wilder Dam was built on the site of Olcott Falls. New England Power Company rebuilt the project, which began operating on December 1, 1950. Great River Hydro now holds the license. The whole impoundment backs the river up about 45 miles, to a point about 4 miles below the Wells River-Woodsville bridge. It covers 3,100 acres, has about 105 miles of shoreline and drains a 3,375-square-mile watershed in New Hampshire and Vermont. Usable storage is limited to a drawdown of about 5 feet.
