On Econfina Creek

Econfina Creek is a small, largely spring-fed river in the middle of the Florida Panhandle. It rises in southwestern Jackson County, flows through Bay and Washington counties, and ends in Bay County at Deer Point Lake. The lake is a 5,000-acre reservoir formed in 1961 by a dam across North Bay, an arm of St. Andrews Bay. The creek is 26 miles long, drains a 275-square-mile watershed and crosses hilly limestone karst. Eleven springs or spring groups feed it, including the first-magnitude Gainer Springs Group. The creek supplies about 60% of the water in Deer Point Lake, which is the main drinking-water source for Bay County. More about Econfina Creek.
