Atlantic ICW (Volusia County) Halifax River

River in Florida · near Daytona Beach, Port Orange

The Halifax River is a 25-mile (40 km) tidal waterway in northeast Volusia County, Florida, and forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Its old name was the North Mosquito River. During the British occupation of Florida (1763–1784) it was renamed for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax. The river begins at Tomoka Bay, next to Tomoka State Park, where the Tomoka River, Bulow Creek and Halifax Creek meet. It flows south past Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Daytona Beach, South Daytona, Daytona Beach Shores and Port Orange. Near its southern end it joins Spruce Creek and the Mosquito Lagoon, then reaches the Atlantic Ocean through Ponce de Leon Inlet. Its drainage basin covers most of eastern Volusia County. Six bridges cross the river, including the Seabreeze, Main Street, Broadway and Veterans Memorial bridges in Daytona Beach.

Public boat ramps on the river are run by the riverfront cities. The ramps listed here are Riverfront Veterans Memorial Park in South Daytona; Halifax Harbor Marina, Bethune Point Park and the City Island Recreation Hall ramp in Daytona Beach; Holly Hill Sunrise Park; and Port Orange Causeway Park. The City of Port Orange describes Causeway Park, at the Port Orange Bridge, as a major boat ramp facility with seven boat ramps and three fishing piers. Its Frank Scofield Boat Ramps reopened after a rebuild that made the docks more resistant to storms. Under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rule 68C-22.012, the Volusia County manatee protection rule, parts of the Halifax River area are motorized-boat Slow Speed zones.

The Halifax River Yacht Club in downtown Daytona Beach was founded in 1896. It describes itself as the oldest yacht club on the East Coast still on its original site.
