On Gun Lake

Gun Lake is a 2,680-acre lake in southwestern Michigan, about 2 miles north of Orangeville. It lies in Yankee Springs and Orangeville townships in Barry County and in Wayland and Martin townships in Allegan County. The lake has an east basin and a west basin, and they differ a great deal. The west basin is mostly less than 10 feet deep, while the east basin reaches a maximum depth of 68 feet. The shoreline runs 17.8 miles, plus 1.4 miles more on islands. The lake has eight inlets, including those from Payne, Long, Hall and Fawn lakes. Its outlet is the Gun River, which joins the Kalamazoo River and drains to Lake Michigan. The lake level has been controlled by dams since a stone dam was built in 1905. A 1921 circuit court order fixed the level at 744.32 feet above sea level, and a new concrete dam was built on the Gun River. That dam was widened to its present 72 feet in 1951.
