On Woman Lake

Woman Lake is a 5,516-acre lake in Cass County, Minnesota, with a maximum depth of 67 feet. The town of Longville is nearby. It is the largest and most visited lake in the Woman Lake Chain, which also includes Child Lake, Girl Lake and Little Woman Lake. The Boy River runs through the chain. A navigable channel links Woman Lake to Girl Lake, and Longville can be reached by boat by way of Girl Lake. The Boy River can be navigated upstream from Woman Lake to Little Woman Lake and Child Lake, although shallow water there can damage a boat's lower unit. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources replaced the old Girl Lake outlet dam on the Boy River with a rock-arch fish passage. Since then, some residents have questioned whether the new structure is lowering water levels on the chain. The DNR has attributed the low water to drought. The lake was named in memory of Ojibwe women who were killed there in a battle against the Sioux. More about Woman Lake.
