On Withlacoochee River

The Withlacoochee River, also known as the Crooked River, is a river in central Florida. It rises in the Green Swamp east of Polk City and flows west, then north and northwest, and finally west into the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown. It is 141 miles long and drains 1,170 square miles. After crossing Pasco and Hernando counties, it forms parts of the borders of Sumter, Citrus, Marion and Levy counties. Its main tributaries are the Little Withlacoochee River, Gum Slough, Jumper Creek, the Outlet River from Lake Panasoffkee and the Rainbow River. The state has named the river an Outstanding Florida Water. Near its mouth, the original Inglis Dam, completed in 1909, formed Lake Rousseau. Florida Power Corporation produced hydropower at the dam until 1965, when the US Army Corps of Engineers began building the Cross Florida Barge Canal. More about Withlacoochee River.
