On Perdido River

The Perdido River is a blackwater river about 65 miles long. It rises in Escambia County, Alabama, about 8 miles northwest of Atmore. For 58 miles it forms the state line between Alabama and Florida, and it empties into the north end of Perdido Bay about 10 miles west of Pensacola. Its watershed covers more than 1,100 square miles in Escambia and Baldwin counties, Alabama, and Escambia County, Florida. Florida has designated it an Outstanding Florida Water and Special Water System. The upper river is a shifting-sand system, and the lower river has a deeper, slower channel with tea-colored water. Its name is Spanish for "lost." From 1682 to 1763 it marked the border of French Louisiana, and it later became the boundary between the Florida Territory and Alabama. More about Perdido River.
