On White Bear Lake

White Bear Lake is a 2,416-acre lake in Ramsey and Washington counties, in the northeast part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The lake is shared by the cities of White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, Dellwood and Birchwood Village and by White Bear Township. It reaches a maximum depth of 83 feet and lies within the Rice Creek Watershed District. Its level has ranged from 926.96 feet above sea level in 1906 to 918.8 feet in 2013. A lawsuit filed in 2012 blamed low lake levels on groundwater pumping, and the Minnesota DNR has since been under court orders that limit groundwater permits near the lake.
