On Wacissa River

The Wacissa River is a large, spring-fed river in south-central Jefferson County, Florida. Its headwaters lie about 1 mile south of the town of Wacissa, where at least 12 known limestone springs rise along the upper 1.5 miles of the river. From the headsprings the river flows about 12 miles south through a broad cypress swamp. It then splits into many braided channels that join the Aucilla River a few miles farther south. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages the river as part of the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has designated it an Outstanding Florida Waterway. Water hyacinth and hydrilla, both non-native plants, dominate the upper reaches. More about Wacissa River.
