On Lake Seminole

Lake Seminole is a 37,500-acre reservoir run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It sits in the southwest corner of Georgia on the Florida line, with Sneads, Florida, on its southwest shore. The Chattahoochee and Flint rivers meet in the lake, and the water leaves through Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam as the Apalachicola River. Congress authorized the project in the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1946. Construction began in 1947, and the lake opened in 1957. The lake has 376 miles of shoreline and reaches about 30 miles up the Chattahoochee and 35 miles up the Flint. Its average depth is about 10 feet and its maximum depth about 30 feet. Filling the reservoir flooded 12,000 acres of standing timber. Boat lanes were cut before flooding and are marked with channel markers. More about Lake Seminole.
