On Straight River

The Straight River is a 55.6-mile tributary of the Cannon River in southeastern Minnesota. Through the Cannon, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. It drains about 450 square miles of farmland. The river rises near Geneva in northern Freeborn County and flows north through Steele County into southern Rice County. It passes Owatonna and Medford before joining the Cannon River at Faribault. The name translates the Dakota name Wakpá Owóthaŋna. The river winds, but its valley is fairly straight. Its main tributaries are Turtle Creek, Maple Creek, Crane Creek and Medford Creek. More about Straight River.
