It rises about 13 miles east of Hoyt Lakes in the Superior National Forest, flows southwest to Floodwood, then turns southeast toward Lake Superior, becoming a freshwater estuary near Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin. Its watershed covers about 3,634 square miles and its width ranges from 75 to 600 feet. Near Thomson, Minnesota Power's Thomson Dam, completed in 1907, impounds the 649-acre Thomson Reservoir.
