On South Manistique Lake

South Manistique Lake, also called Whitefish Lake, is a natural lake in Mackinac County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It lies at the south edge of Curtis, which sits on the strip of land between it and Big Manistique Lake. Older surveys put its surface area at 4,001 acres. A 2008 Michigan DNR study used a newer estimate of 4,133 acres. The lake is about 4.5 miles long and 2 miles wide and runs from southwest to northeast. It averages 10 feet deep and reaches about 29 feet at its deepest. About 10 percent of the lake is deeper than 20 feet. Norton Creek, Taylor Creek, Strom Creek and the Shoepac River flow into it. Its only outlet, Portage Creek, leaves from the north end in Curtis and drains into Big Manistique Lake, which is 6 feet lower. A 1.5-mile spit of glacial gravel called Long Point reaches into the lake from the western shore. More about South Manistique Lake.
