On Saint Croix River

The St. Croix River (Skutik in Maliseet-Passamaquoddy) runs 71 miles along part of the border between Maine and New Brunswick. It starts in the Chiputneticook Lakes, flows south and southeast between Calais and St. Stephen, and empties into Passamaquoddy Bay on the Bay of Fundy. It drains about 1,500 square miles. Its East, or international, branch joins the West Branch at Grand Falls Flowage at Kellyland. From there the river runs about 18 miles to head-of-tide at Calais, followed by a tidal estuary of about 16 miles. Many hydroelectric dams were built on the river in the 20th century. Woodland Pulp operates the Vanceboro and Forest City dams as storage dams. New Brunswick Power began removing the Milltown Dam at Calais in 2023, and fish could pass the site in 2024.
