On Roseau River

The Roseau River is a 214-mile tributary of the Red River of the North that flows through northwestern Minnesota and southern Manitoba. By way of the Red River, Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson River, it drains to Hudson Bay. The river rises in the wetlands of the Beltrami Island State Forest, runs north and west across Roseau County past the city of Roseau, and enters Manitoba just west of Caribou. Its name comes from the French word for reed. The Minnesota portion of the watershed covers 774,197 acres, and another 594,560 acres lie in Canada. Glacial Lake Agassiz once covered the basin, which is the watershed most severely affected by flooding in the Red River Basin. In the upper river, a dam forms Hayes Lake. More about Roseau River.
