On North New River Canal

The North New River Canal, also called the G-15 canal, is a drainage and water-control canal in South Florida. It flows south from Lake Okeechobee along the east side of U.S. 27, then turns east along the north side of State Road 84 and Interstate 595. It is one of three Everglades canals that join to form the New River in Broward County. Dredging started in 1906, after Napoleon B. Broward won the governorship of Florida on a promise to drain the Everglades. The canal runs about 42 miles south-southeast from the lake and then about 16 miles east-southeast to the river's former end, near the Riverland section of Fort Lauderdale. It was finished in 1912, when Lock No. 1 opened in what is now Plantation. The South Florida Water Management District manages the canal, and the USGS runs a monitoring station on it near Fort Lauderdale. More about North New River Canal.
