On Rainy Lake

Rainy Lake is a large lake on the Canadian Shield along the Minnesota–Ontario border. It covers 220,800 acres, and 54,140 of those acres are in Minnesota. Among the lakes the Minnesota DNR manages, it is the third largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake of the Woods. Its maximum depth is 161 feet, but 35 percent of the Minnesota waters are less than 15 feet deep. The shoreline is rocky and irregular, with many islands. Namakan Lake, Kabetogama Lake and the Seine River flow into it, and it drains through the Rainy River, part of the Hudson Bay drainage basin. A dam built in 1909 between International Falls, Minnesota, and Fort Frances, Ontario, controls the lake's water level. Levels are managed under International Joint Commission rule curves. Voyageurs National Park, established in 1975, takes in the Minnesota waters from east Black Bay to Kettle Falls. More about Rainy Lake.
