On Saint Lucie Canal

The St. Lucie Canal, also called the C-44 Canal, is a man-made canal in Martin County, Florida. It runs about 26 miles from Lake Okeechobee at Port Mayaca to the St. Lucie Estuary by way of the South Fork of the St. Lucie River. The canal was built between 1916 and 1924 to carry floodwaters away from the lake. It was deepened to 6 feet in 1937 so boats could use it, and to 8 feet in 1949. Today it forms the eastern part of the 152-mile Okeechobee Waterway, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico through the Caloosahatchee River. More about Saint Lucie Canal.
