On Shagawa Lake
Shagawa Lake is a natural lake of about 2,345 acres on the north side of Ely in St. Louis County, Minnesota. It has about 23 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 48 feet. The lake formed during the last ice age, roughly 10,000 years ago. Most of its bottom is flat at about 20 to 26 feet, with three deeper basins of about 40 feet, and it has many islands and submerged rock outcrops. The Burntside River flows in from Burntside Lake at the west end and supplies about 70 percent of the lake's yearly inflow. The Shagawa River, the only outlet, leaves from the east end.
