On Lake Huron

Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Canada's province of Ontario borders it on the north and east, and Michigan borders it on the west and south. It covers about 23,000 square miles, which makes it the second-largest of the Great Lakes by surface area. The average depth is 195 feet and the maximum depth is 750 feet. Its main inflows are the St. Marys River from Lake Superior and the Straits of Mackinac. It drains south through the St. Clair River. The Straits of Mackinac are about 5 miles wide, and Lake Huron and Lake Michigan sit at the same level, so hydrologically they form a single body of water sometimes called Lake Michigan–Huron. Including islands, the shoreline is about 3,827 miles long. Saginaw Bay lies in the lake's southwest corner. Michigan towns on the shore include Bay City, Alpena, Cheboygan, St. Ignace and Port Huron. More about Lake Huron.
