On Pine River

The Pine River is a 53.6-mile tributary of the Manistee River in Michigan's northwestern Lower Peninsula. It was formerly called the South Branch Manistee River. The river begins where its North Branch and East Branch meet in northwest Osceola County. From there it flows southwest, then west and north, through the northeast corner of Lake County and into southwest Wexford County. It ends in Tippy Dam Pond on the Manistee River in Manistee County, and its watershed covers 265 square miles. Much of the lower river runs through the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The lower 26 miles, starting at Lincoln Bridge, were designated a National Scenic River on March 3, 1992. The USDA Forest Service reports that the Pine has the fastest average flow of any river in lower Michigan, with a deeply cut channel and high, exposed sand banks. More about Pine River.
