On Pelican Lake

Pelican Lake is a shallow lake in eastern Wright County, Minnesota, lying in Saint Michael and Buffalo townships between Buffalo and Monticello. A 2006 outlet feasibility study described it as a 4,000-acre lake. It is one of 48 state-designated wildlife lakes in Minnesota, a status that allows the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to manage its water levels primarily for wildlife. The basin has no natural inlets or outlets and drains a watershed of about 13,000 acres. Water levels rose from the 1970s onward, and water quality and aquatic plants declined. With Ducks Unlimited, the DNR built a gravity outlet, a water control structure and a pump station, finished in 2018, so the lake can be drawn down to restore habitat for migrating diving ducks.
