On Otter Tail Lake
Otter Tail Lake is a natural lake of 13,725 acres in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, and the largest lake in the county. It reaches a maximum depth of 120 feet, but 57 percent of the lake is less than 15 feet deep. The city of Ottertail sits on its shore. The lake is part of the Otter Tail River chain of lakes. Rush, Big Pine and Little Pine lakes lie upstream, and Deer, East Lost and West Lost lakes lie downstream. The Otter Tail River enters along the north shore, the Dead River enters along the northwest shore, and the river leaves along the southwest shore. Its water eventually reaches Hudson Bay by way of the Red River of the North. The outlet dam was built by the WPA and is owned by the Minnesota DNR. It was rebuilt in 1993 with no operable features.
