Conditions

On Lake Bellaire

Lake Bellaire, formerly known as Grass Lake, is a deep natural lake southwest of the village of Bellaire in Antrim County, Michigan. The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council lists it at 1,789 acres, with 12 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 95 feet. It is part of the Elk River Chain of Lakes. The Intermediate River drains the upper chain through Bellaire into the lake, and Grass Creek enters at the north end of the North Arm. Water leaves through the Grass River, which runs about 2 miles through the Grass River Natural Area to Clam Lake. From there it flows on to Torch Lake and reaches Lake Michigan at Elk Rapids. Most of the chain is navigable by small boat, with the only break at a dam in Bellaire. Extensive wetlands surround the lake, and its shoreline has almost no natural rock. More about Lake Bellaire.
