On Lake Pepin

Lake Pepin is a naturally occurring lake on the Mississippi River along the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. It lies in Goodhue and Wabasha counties in Minnesota and Pepin County in Wisconsin. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources gives its area as 29,295 acres and its length as 21 miles, from Red Wing to Alma, Wisconsin. It ranks as Minnesota's sixth-largest lake. The lake is 1.7 miles across on average and two miles at its widest, making it the widest navigable stretch of the Mississippi. Its average depth is 21 feet and its maximum depth is 60 feet. The lake formed where the river backs up behind a delta of sediment that Wisconsin's Chippewa River deposited near Wabasha. That delta sits in a valley carved at the end of the last Ice Age by Glacial River Warren. Lake City is the largest city on the shore, and Frontenac State Park covers much of the northwestern shore.
