On Lake Minnewawa

Lake Minnewawa is a 2,355-acre lake in northeastern Aitkin County, Minnesota, near McGregor. It has a maximum depth of 21 feet, but most of it is shallow: about 2,286 acres, or 97 percent of the lake, is 15 feet deep or less. Its watershed covers about 13,243 acres. The lake is part of the Big Sandy Lake watershed. It drains through Minnewawa Creek to the Sandy River, which flows into Big Sandy Lake, whose outlet runs to the Mississippi River. There is a dam at the lake's outlet. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency listed Lake Minnewawa, along with Big Sandy Lake, as impaired by excess nutrients (phosphorus) and completed a Total Maximum Daily Load study in 2011. Much of the shoreline is developed with seasonal and year-round homes. More about Lake Minnewawa.
