On Lake Minnewaska

Lake Minnewaska is a natural lake in Pope County, Minnesota. It covers about 8,050 acres, has 20 miles of shoreline, and reaches a maximum depth of 32 feet, with an average depth of 17 feet. The cities of Glenwood and Starbuck lie along its shores. The lake belongs to the Minnesota River watershed. It drains through Outlet Creek and Lake Emily, and then through an unnamed channel from Lake Emily to the Chippewa River. The name Minnewaska comes from a Dakota phrase meaning "good water." Dakota speakers also called the lake Bde Škokpa, or "Hollow Lake," because of the steep hills around it, especially on the northeast side. More about Lake Minnewaska.
