On Lake Apopka

Lake Apopka is a natural lake in northwest Orange County and southeast Lake County, Florida. It is the fourth-largest lake in Florida. The Orange County Water Atlas gives its surface area as 30,909 acres and its mean depth as 7 feet. The lake is fed by a natural spring, rainfall and stormwater runoff, and it is the headwaters of the Ocklawaha Chain of Lakes. Its water flows through the Apopka-Beauclair Canal into Lakes Beauclair and Dora, then through Lakes Eustis and Griffin to the Ocklawaha River, which joins the St. Johns River. Work on the Apopka-Beauclair Canal began in 1888. In the 1940s the floodplain marsh on the north shore was diked and drained for farming. More about Lake Apopka.
