On Madison Lake

Madison Lake is a natural freshwater lake in Blue Earth County in south central Minnesota, east of the Mankato area. The Minnesota DNR lists it at 1,446 acres, with a maximum depth of 59 feet, 12 miles of shoreline and 722 acres of littoral area. The Madison Lake Watershed and Lake Association gives a watershed of 12,530 acres. The lake belongs to the Le Sueur River watershed, and the city of Madison Lake sits on its northwest shore. The lake is named after President James Madison. Ice-out dates have been recorded on it since 1927. The DNR monitors it as a Sentinel Lake, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency lists it as impaired water. High nutrient levels cause frequent algae blooms, and curly-leaf pondweed and Eurasian watermilfoil are its main weeds. More about Madison Lake.
