On Saint John River

The Saint John River is a 418-mile river that rises near the Maine–Quebec border and flows through northern Maine and western New Brunswick to the northwest shore of the Bay of Fundy. It is the longest river in eastern Canada, and its drainage basin covers about 21,000 square miles. Its headwaters include the Southwest, Northwest and Baker branches, and the Allagash River joins it in Maine. The upper river runs north for 143 miles from Fifth St. John Pond to Allagash Village. After the Aroostook War, the Webster–Ashburton Treaty made about 81 miles of the river the border between Maine and New Brunswick. Fort Kent, Madawaska and Van Buren are among the Maine communities along its banks. Further downstream in New Brunswick, hydroelectric dams at Grand Falls, Beechwood and Mactaquac regulate the river.
