On Lura Lake

Lura Lake is a shallow lake in southern Blue Earth County and northern Faribault County, Minnesota, in the Le Sueur River watershed. It lies near the towns of Amboy, Mapleton and Delavan. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency puts its surface area at about 1,300 acres, with a mean depth of about 4.7 feet and a maximum depth of 9 feet. Blue Earth County lists it at 1,263 acres. The lake formed in an irregular deposit of glacial till that left a closed basin, one with no obvious inlet or outlet. Roads and levees have since changed its natural outflow, and the existing outlet was built to reduce flooding at high water. The lake nearly disappeared in the 1920s and 1930s, when much of the lake bed was used as pasture. According to tradition, government surveyors named it after seeing "Lura" carved into a tree near the shore. More about Lura Lake.
