On Long Prairie River

The Long Prairie River is a 96-mile tributary of the Crow Wing River in central Minnesota. It is part of the Mississippi River watershed and drains 892 square miles. It flows out of Lake Carlos in Douglas County, just south of Lake Carlos State Park, and runs east into Todd County. At Long Prairie it turns north-northeast, passing Browerville and the Long Prairie River Wildlife Management Area before entering the Crow Wing about a mile southeast of Motley in Morrison County. The river is named for a narrow twenty-mile stretch of prairie that bordered its eastern side. At the USGS gauge in Long Prairie, mean annual flow from 1972 to 2005 was 166 cubic feet per second.
