On San Carlos Bay

San Carlos Bay is a tidal bay in Lee County, Florida. It covers 20,240 acres southwest of Fort Myers at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. To the west it connects to Pine Island Sound and to the north to Matlacha Pass. Water flows into it from the Caloosahatchee River and from Punta Rassa Pass to the south. The Sanibel Canal System and the east and west Sanibel Sloughs drain into it. On the mainland shore is Bunche Beach Preserve, a 718-acre tidal wetland that Lee County acquired in 2001. Its beach, mangrove forests and salt flats draw paddlers and anglers, and the preserve has a kayak launch. More about San Carlos Bay.
