On Hillsborough River
The Hillsborough River is a river in west-central Florida. It rises in the Green Swamp near the point where Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties meet. From there it flows about 60 miles through Pasco and Hillsborough counties, passing Thonotosassa, Temple Terrace and Tampa, and empties into Hillsborough Bay in Tampa. Its drainage basin covers about 740 square miles. Just downstream of Temple Terrace, the Hillsborough River Dam in Sulphur Springs holds back the City of Tampa's Hillsborough River Reservoir. The reservoir covers about 1,300 acres, can store up to 1.2 billion gallons and is the city's primary source of drinking water. The city finished the current dam in 1944 on the site of an earlier Tampa Electric dam that a flood washed away in 1933. The Tampa Bypass Canal, about 14 miles long, was built in the 1960s and 1970s for flood control. More about Hillsborough River.
