On Leech Lake

Leech Lake is a 112,000-acre lake in Cass County in north-central Minnesota. It is the third largest lake located entirely within the state. The lake lies mostly within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and entirely within the Chippewa National Forest, and it reaches a maximum depth of 156 feet. It spans three glacial zones and has an irregular shape with many large and small bays. Its Ojibwe name translates as "the place of the leeching lake." The lake drains through the Leech Lake River to the Mississippi River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam at the outlet between 1882 and 1884, one of several Mississippi Headwaters reservoirs built for flood and flow control. The Leech Lake Dam stands at the northeast corner of Portage Bay and is one of six dams the Corps operates in the Mississippi Headwaters Project. Lake levels follow a water control plan approved by Congress. More about Leech Lake.
