On Le Sueur River

The Le Sueur River is a 111-mile (179 km) tributary of the Blue Earth River in south-central Minnesota. It is named for the French explorer Pierre-Charles Le Sueur. The river rises in Hartland Township in northwestern Freeborn County and first flows north. It then turns west in a winding course through Waseca County into Blue Earth County, passing the city of St. Clair. It joins the Blue Earth River southwest of Mankato, about three miles upstream of where the Blue Earth meets the Minnesota River. It is the largest tributary of the Blue Earth and drains 711,838 acres, mostly farmland. Its main tributaries are the Cobb and Maple rivers. In its lower course the river cuts down through high bluffs and deep ravines. Between 1940 and 2005, the U.S. Geological Survey gauge near Rapidan, two miles above the mouth, recorded a mean flow of 549 cubic feet per second. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reports that parts of the river have turbidity, low dissolved oxygen and excess nutrients. It names the watershed as a major source of sediment and nutrients to the Minnesota River. More about Le Sueur River.
