On Lake Itasca

Lake Itasca is a small glacial lake of about 1,200 acres in Itasca State Park, in southeastern Clearwater County in north-central Minnesota. It is best known as the primary source of the Mississippi River, which leaves the lake at its north end and flows 2,340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Nicollet Creek and the outlet stream of Elk Lake feed the lake's western arm, and Schoolcraft Island lies in the lake. The surface sits at 1,475 feet above sea level. The lake is fairly shallow: a few pockets reach about 40 feet, but most of it is less than half that deep. In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps dug a new outlet channel and built a rock rapids across it. The Minnesota DNR reshaped and stabilized that outlet in 2020 and left the underlying dam unchanged. More about Lake Itasca.
