On Lake Weir

Lake Weir is a freshwater lake in southern Marion County, Florida, and the largest lake in the county. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gives its area as 5,685 acres. FWC notes that its bottom is irregular, which is unusual for a Florida lake, with depths of more than 20 feet. Wikipedia lists a maximum depth of 34 feet and 38 miles of shoreline. The main lake measures about four miles across, and a second basin called Sunset Harbor adjoins it. To the west, a canal connects it to Little Lake Weir. The lake is sometimes grouped with the Harris Chain of Lakes to the southeast but has no direct water connection to them. Weirsdale, Ocklawaha and Eastlake Weir lie on its shores.   • Hope Boat Ramp is open only to Marion County park pass holders, sunrise to sunset source
  • Carney Island charges a $7 daily user fee per vehicle; hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. from March through October and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. from November through February; pets are not allowed source
  • Kiwanis Beach at Albright Park is open by reservation only, 7 a.m.-10 p.m. source
