On Lake Istokpoga

Lake Istokpoga is a shallow natural lake in Highlands County, Florida, about five miles northeast of Lake Placid. Both the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) give its area as 27,692 acres, and it is the fifth-largest lake in Florida. The average depth is 4 to 6 feet. The deepest point, about 10 feet, is in the southwest corner. The main inflows are Arbuckle Creek from the north and Josephine Creek from the northwest. The G-85 structure, built in 1948–1949, releases water east into the Istokpoga Canal, which flows to the Kissimmee River. The S-68 structure, built in 1962, releases water south into the C-41A Canal, which carries it toward the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee. These flood-control works ended the lake's natural high and low water levels. The lake has two interior islands, Big Island and Bumble Bee Island. More about Lake Istokpoga.
