On Island Lake Reservoir

Island Lake Reservoir is an impoundment of the Cloquet River in St. Louis County, Minnesota, north of Duluth near Fredenberg and Rice Lake. It covers about 8,000 acres and has a maximum depth of 94 feet. Minnesota Power owns the shoreline and leases lots to lake residents. The reservoir is one of five storage reservoirs in Minnesota Power's St. Louis River Hydroelectric Project, along with Whiteface, Boulder Lake, Fish Lake and Rice Lake. Water is released from these reservoirs in winter to run the utility's hydroelectric stations downstream, and discharges are cut back in spring so the reservoirs can refill. Releases from Island Lake Dam set the flow of the Cloquet River below it. Minnesota Power must provide a minimum of 350 cubic feet per second in May and June and 175 cubic feet per second for the rest of the summer, when that much water is available.
