On Platte River

The Platte River is a 29.5-mile river in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It begins at Long Lake in Grand Traverse County, then flows west across Benzie County and empties into Platte Bay, a small bay of Lake Michigan, inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The river drains about 193 square miles. Above Big Platte Lake it passes through Lake Dubonnet, Lake Ann and Bronson Lake, runs past the community of Platte River and the town of Honor, and is joined by the North Branch. The lower river flows out of Platte Lake south of Empire and widens into Loon Lake before reaching the mouth at Platte River Point. The upper river is swifter and colder than the lower stretch, which warms as it passes through the shallow Platte Lake. With a gradient of about 5 feet per mile, the river is listed as one of Michigan's Blue Ribbon Trout Streams. More about Platte River.
