On Flat River

The Flat River is a tributary of the Grand River in western Michigan. It runs about 70 miles and drains roughly 560 square miles of Montcalm, Ionia and Kent counties. It begins as the outflow of First Lake, the last lake in the Six Lakes chain in Belvidere Township, west of Edmore. From there it flows mostly south and slightly west past Greenville, Belding and Smyrna and joins the Grand River at Lowell. There are five dams on the river, at Greenville, Belding, Whites Bridge, Burroughs and Lowell. On November 9, 1979, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission designated it a country-scenic river under the state's Natural Rivers Act. More about Flat River.
