On Fisheating Creek

Fisheating Creek is a stream in south-central Florida that flows into Lake Okeechobee. It is the only remaining free-flowing watercourse that feeds the lake. Sources give its length as anywhere from 40 to 51 miles. The creek flows south through the Cypress Swamp in southwestern Highlands County and into Glades County. There it turns east and runs about 30 miles to the lake, spreading out into Cowbone Marsh for its last 8 miles before it reaches Fisheating Bay. After the Kissimmee River, it is the second-largest natural source of water for Lake Okeechobee, supplying close to 9 percent of the lake's inflow. The Herbert Hoover Dike almost completely encloses the lake, and its only gap is at the mouth of the creek. The nearest communities are Palmdale, close to the U.S. 27 crossing, and Lakeport, near the mouth. More about Fisheating Creek.
