On Detroit Lake

Detroit Lake is a 3,067-acre lake in Becker County, Minnesota, lying entirely within the city limits of Detroit Lakes. A shallow gravel bar divides it into two basins known locally as Big Detroit, with a maximum depth of 89 feet, and Little Detroit, with a maximum depth of 16 feet. The lake formed about 10,000 years ago when ice blocks left in retreating glacial deposits melted. The Pelican River enters the north side of Big Detroit and leaves from the southwest side of Little Detroit. The lake has no water control structure; its level is set further downstream by rock rapids between Muskrat and Sallie lakes. It is the largest lake in the Pelican River Watershed District.
