On Dead Lake

Dead Lake is a natural lake in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, about 5 miles south of Dent. It covers nearly 8,000 acres. The Dead Lake Association ranks it as the 33rd-largest lake in the state. The lake has three major basins, 36.3 miles of mainland shoreline and four more miles of island shoreline. Its maximum depth is 65 feet and its mean depth is 9.5 feet. About 83 percent of its area is 15 feet deep or less. It reaches from Dead Lake Township west into Star Lake and Maine townships. Its outlet, the Dead River, flows to Walker Lake and then to Otter Tail Lake. In 1975 the Minnesota DNR classified it as a Natural Environment Lake, the most restrictive shoreland class for building density, setbacks and lot size. More about Dead Lake.
