On Cross Lake

Cross Lake is a reservoir lake in Crow Wing County, north-central Minnesota, beside the city of Crosslake. It is one of the easternmost waters of the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. According to the Minnesota DNR it covers 1,812 acres and has 21 miles of shoreline. It runs about 5 miles from north to south and averages about 1 mile wide. The lake has a maximum depth of 84 feet, but half of it, including the southern third, is 15 feet deep or less. Four islands lie in the lake. The lake takes its name from the Pine River, which flows west to east across it. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Pine River Dam stands at the lake's outlet, 18 river miles above the point where the Pine River joins the Mississippi. The original timber dam was built in 1884 and went into operation in 1886. It raised water levels and cut channels between the 14 lakes that now form the chain. The present concrete structure was built between 1905 and 1907. More about Cross Lake.
