On Cass Lake

Cass Lake is a natural lake of glacial origin in Cass and Beltrami counties in north-central Minnesota. It lies next to the city of Cass Lake and entirely within the Chippewa National Forest and the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. The Minnesota DNR gives its area as 15,596 acres, with a maximum depth of 120 feet and a mean depth of 25 feet. The lake is about 10 miles long and 7 miles wide and has five islands, the largest being Star Island. The Mississippi River flows through it from west to east, the Turtle River enters from the north, and the Mississippi leaves at the northeast corner toward Lake Winnibigoshish. The U.S. Forest Service's Knutson Dam at the outlet was converted in the winter of 2015-2016 to a fixed-crest rock-arch structure. To the south, the 4,760-acre Pike Bay connects to the lake through a narrow channel. More about Cass Lake.
