On Cannon River

The Cannon River is a tributary of the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota. It flows 112 miles from Shields Lake near Shieldsville to Red Wing, where it joins the Mississippi. It drains a watershed of about 1,460 square miles in Le Sueur, Rice, Dakota and Goodhue counties and varies from 50 to 200 feet wide. Its chief tributary, the Straight River, enters at Faribault. In 1910, H.M. Byllesby & Company built the 75-foot Lake Byllesby Dam just west of Cannon Falls for hydroelectric power, which created Lake Byllesby. Dakota County owns and operates the dam. Below Cannon Falls, the river enters a broad gorge flanked by bluffs up to 300 feet high. From Faribault to its mouth, it is a designated Minnesota Wild and Scenic River. More about Cannon River.
