On Buffalo Lake
Buffalo Lake is a lake in eastern Wright County, Minnesota. It lies inside the city limits of Buffalo and borders the city. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lists it at 1,552 acres with a maximum depth of 33 feet. About 49 percent of the lake is shallower than 15 feet. It drains a watershed of 14,527 acres and connects to the Crow River through Deer Lake and Mill Creek. Its surface sits at an elevation of 912 feet. The lake was named for the buffalo fish that were once plentiful in it. The DNR describes it as hypereutrophic and windswept. The lake does not stratify in summer and does not winterkill. Until 1980 it received wastewater from the municipal treatment plant, which is part of the reason it has large nuisance algal blooms, though the DNR has noted signs of recovery.
